Milestone XProtect: Open Platform, Certified Device Packs
Milestone XProtect (the enterprise VMS) positions itself as an open platform: cameras connect through certified integrations (Device Packs) or plain ONVIF. Enterprise deployments work from the supported-devices list; for smaller installs, any ONVIF S/T camera streams in.
How to add a third-party camera
- For full feature support, install the camera vendor's Milestone Device Pack.
- Without a Device Pack, add the camera as ONVIF (Profile S) - streaming and basic events work.
- Check Milestone's supported-devices list to see which tiers your camera has been certified at.
What works vs what breaks on third-party cameras
- ONVIF-certified cameras (open platform, official)
- Certified Device Pack integrations (full analytics)
- RTSP streaming
- Vendor smart features without a Milestone-specific Device Pack
- Enterprise licensing complexity on small systems
Common questions
Two paths: certified Device Pack integrations (full feature support, vendor-verified) or plain ONVIF (streaming + basic events). The official supported-devices list separates these tiers.
